Short stories and sharp lessons about hiring, management, and building teams — from the Founder of HireUA.

At Little Miss Mau’s school, we had a meeting with all the parents.

The teacher said something like, “Don’t be concerned if your kids come home speaking languages you’ve never heard before. We’re a very international school.”

And I sat there thinking: wait, what?

Parents are actually worried their kid will learn too many languages and get confused?

Maybe it’s because I’m from the US, my wife is Ukrainian, and we’ve lived in a bunch of different countries. Little Miss Mau has been hearing different languages since day one.

She speaks English, Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian, though the Russian mostly comes out with her grandparents. And now she’s dabbling in Spanish and Portuguese.

For kids, it’s just that simple.

But get this:

Every language makes the next one easier.

Growing up with Ukrainian made Polish easy, and Czech or Slovak would be easy too. Once she has Spanish and Portuguese down, French and Italian won’t be much of a stretch.

The skills stack.

Here’s the thing:

That’s exactly how hiring works too. And it’s what most founders get wrong.

They write a job post with ten skills on it. Then they wait for the unicorn who already has all ten, at a price they can afford, ready to start Monday.

Months go by.

The seat stays empty.

And the person they finally hire looked perfect on paper and stopped growing on day one.

The truth is this:

The right person doesn’t need all ten skills. They need a few of them, plus the thing that let my daughter pick up Polish without trying.

They learn fast. And every new tool makes the next one easier.

Give that person your CRM, your SOPs and a couple of weeks, and they’ll know your business better than the “perfect” candidate who’s coasting on what they already know.

So when we fill a seat, we don’t just ask “can they do this today?”

We ask “will this person be better at it in six months than anyone you could hire right now?”

That’s the right person in the right seat.

A resume tells you what someone has done. It doesn’t tell you how fast they’ll learn your business.

Founder, HireUA

I moved to Ukraine in 2016 and built internet businesses from Eastern Europe. My first hires there changed how I work, and by 2021 that lesson had turned into a small recruiting business that became HireUA. Since then we’ve made 1,100+ placements across 40+ countries and saved clients an estimated $100M+ in payroll. I’m a member of EO (Entrepreneurs’ Organization) and the former EO Staffing & Recruiting industry lead.
